How to Fix a Leaking Irrigation System and Maintain a Freeze-Proof Yard Hydrant

Today we’d like to share another interesting plumbing case — how to repair a leak in an irrigation system, and whether maintaining a freeze-proof yard hydrant really protects it from freezing.

One day, the client received a text message from the city:

“This is a notification that there has been water running continuously for 24 hours.”

The client’s home has two water meters. After checking both, we found that the irrigation system’s water meter was spinning non-stop.

Step 1: Locate the Leak

We pumped high-pressure air into the irrigation system and found the leak point was below the yard hydrant.

It turned out the system was DIY-ed by the homeowner. The materials and connections used were unprofessional and not durable. So we decided to take advantage of this dig and upgrade the system by installing a freeze-proof hydrant.

Step 2: Replace with a Freeze-Proof Yard Hydrant

We filmed a short video showing how a freeze-proof yard hydrant works. The key principle is that after the water is shut off, any remaining water inside the hydrant drains out through a weep hole at the base. This means there is no standing water left inside the hydrant body when it’s off — which is why it won’t freeze and break.

Step 3: Test and Backfill

After confirming there were no more leaks, we began back filling. We used small gravel at the bottom to ensure the drainage (weep) hole wouldn’t get blocked, allowing the hydrant to keep its freeze-proof function.

The customer was very happi for our solution.

第一步：查漏

把高压空气泵入灌溉系统，找到漏水点在立式水龙头的下方。

这是客户自己DIY做的，材料和连接都不专业，寿命会很短。我们决定就这次挖开的机会，换成防冻的水龙头。

第二步，更换立式防冻水龙头

我们拍了一个小视频，形象地看到防冻水龙头防冻的原理，是当把水关闭的时候，存水会从泄放口流走，所以立式水龙头里面在关闭状态时是没有水的，也就不会被冻坏。

第三步，测试，并回填。

测试不再漏水，回填时，在底部用小石子，保证泄放口不会被堵住。
